Materials

SOG backpack review

This backpack, like many other quality backpacks, is made from high-quality 500-denier polyester. This material is meant to add additional strength and support without a bulky look. The zippers were also constructed of durable polyester and steel.

I really liked the material when feeling it. Now, I didn’t get any holes after vigorous use, but that said, this still has to be handled with a little care to prevent any possible holes that will form only under the worst of conditions. The overall material is great for its price and I would recommend it.

Comfort

This has padded shoulder straps and several security fasteners for just the right fit and proper weight distribution for zero strain. This is crucial for wearing backpacks for an extended period of time. There are also bottom lashing straps for additional comfort.

There is one thing I didn’t like. The back doesn’t ventilate extremely well, so I got a little overheated every once in a while.

Durability

SOG was named in honor of the U.S. Special Ops that fought in Vietnam. All of their products were designed to be tough. This bag is made from 500-denier polyester, which is one of the toughest materials for bags.

One day I actually left it out in the snow, and nothing happened, not water got leaked in, and the exterior was just a little damp. Overall, I’m happy with the durability, especially for its price. Even if you somehow break it, there is a lifetime warranty for this bag.

Organization

This bag offers many different pockets for different purposes. The main compartment has several pockets in there, making it easy to put a laptop, a small first aid kit, and other essentials. All of the pockets are protective, so don’t worry about scratches.

To add on, these have side compartments meant to hold hydration packs and velcro for anything essential you may want to put there. I liked how everything was easy to access and the organization was decent.

About SOG

Studies Observation Group and Specialty Knives or SOG Specialty Knives is a well-known American company that is known for its knives accessories, and backpacks. Many of the SOG designs were inspired by original military equipment.

SOG Specialty Knives started making knives for U.S. special ops units during the Vietnam war. That later inspired the founder, Spencer Frazer to design new equipment. Now, SOG strives to make the highest quality equipment for the lowest price.

Below is a quick introduction to SOG.

Performance as a Bugout, EDC, and Outdoors Bag

When inspecting this, it was pretty easy to tell that this could be used as a bugout bag because it was pretty low-key, not attracting attention. This also easily had enough storage for 72 hours worth of survival in the wilderness.

Now, when considering if this was a good EDC, I obviously measured its initial weight, which was about three pounds, making it considerably light. This backpack can also be compact if necessary, and I could easily carry this around everywhere. This also had multiple compartments for the organization, which was nice.

Now, after that, I used it for a couple of days outdoors. The three additional pounds didn’t bother me personally. I did activities like hiking and fishing. The first thing I noticed was it wasn’t completely water and dirt-proof.

However, it was water and dirt-resistant, which was very helpful. This also had multiple features MOLLE webbings for convenient access to flashlights or other tools I needed.

So, all in all, it performs amazingly for bugout and EDC and decently for an outdoor bag. But, for the price, I’d say the SOG Opord is worth it.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • Highly rated from thousands of reviews
  • Life-time warranty
  • Very inexpensive and best for EDC budget
  • Very comfortable design
  • Easy access design
  • Tons of pockets for organization
  • Velcro on the front for patches
  • Leakproof material and design
  • Large (22 x 12.7 x 7 inches (WxHxD))
  • Water-resistant material and airtight/watertight design
  • Includes MOLLE webbing
  • Includes left/right tubing ports
  • Multiple color options
  • Medium-light weight

Cons
  • Not 100% water/dirtproof from the outside
  • A little annoying because it falls over because of slightly rounded bottom
  • Back ventilation isn't perfect, so it can get a little uncomfortable

SOG Backpack Review Bottom Line

This is nearing the end of this SOG backpack review. Overall, this is a good and reliable backpack that is great for bugout EDC and decent for the outdoors. This is great for SHFT situations, and I have a positive impression of this bag. None of the cons are major for me.
